Nursing Courses

Nursing is an attractive profession in the United States. It is gaining more and more popularity and the kind of money and job satisfaction that one gets is adding up to the lure of this profession. Reports state that an amateur nurse start with something around $35,000 and at the end of the year their earnings amount to around $100,000.

The first criterion to enter a nursing school is a high school diploma. In some cases an applicant may also require to sit for a pre admission test known as National League for Nursing Pre-admission exam.

There are generally three routes or courses to earn a nursing degree

* A Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing (BSN). * An Associate degree in Nursing (AND). * Hospital diploma.

Licensed graduates from any of the above mentioned courses are eligible to enter as entry level nurses.

BSN or Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing is the most common degree among the three nursing courses offered in American universities. The duration for this program is four years. According to a recent study, around 674 nursing programs were offered at bachelors level in the year 2004. Accelerated BSN programs are also there for people who have completed their bachelors degree in a different field.

Accelerated BSN degree programs range from 12 to 18 months. But advantages of a regular BSN are more. Opportunities to grow are more if one follows this program. It opens the doors to the four advanced practice nursing specialties nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners. On completion of these programs, registered nurses become nationally certified.

An Associate degree is a much shorter course generally offered in community colleges. Here the students are directly permitted to practice patient nursing. Students here are also required to study General science and English apart from the nursing courses.

A hospital diploma course has the same structure as Associate degree course except for the fact that it does not include subjects like General science and English. All these courses are conducted in proper classes and also training is done in hospitals and other health care facilities.

Supervised clinical experience is provided in hospital departments such as pediatrics, psychiatry, maternity and surgery. A growing number of programs include clinical experience in nursing care facilities, public health departments, home health agencies and ambulatory clinics.

The road does not end here. The nursing students, after obtaining their degrees have to sit for a license examination. Three kinds of license examinations are there- Advanced Practice Nurse license, Registered Nurse license and Practical or Vocational Nurse license. For those who want to further deepen their study and understanding of nursing, they can opt for the Masters and Doctoral degrees.
